Program Description

Event Details

Celebrate Juneteenth with the Black History Ensemble of the Community Music School of Springfield! Enjoy a performance of the rhythms and dances of West Africa first, honoring the source of so much of the culture of the western hemisphere. The ensemble then traces West African rhythms as they traveled to the new world and took expression in Puerto Rican music. Finally, we celebrate the African roots of American music, namely hip hop. After our performance, we invite the audience to join us in a fun, informal drum circle. Everyone will get a chance to play West African drums, sing a song, and try some cool moves.

This program made possible by a grant from the Springfield Library Foundation's Rose M. Smith Music Fund.
