Purpose of Meeting
The event is a one-act original play written and performed by Equity actress Jarice Hanson, presenting the life of the relatively unknown first woman Cabinet member of the U.S. -- Frances Perkins.
The goals are to introduce this woman, who was Secretary of Labor under FDR in the 1930's and the years through WWII. The woman behind the man crafted some of the most significant legislation of the New Deal Era. For those who think that Social Security, child labor laws, minimum wage, the 40-hour work week, and policies focused on social justice have always been the work of men with ties, this presentation shows that all were created by one woman.
The performance will be followed by a Q&A to Ms. Perkins in character and then to the actress.
Perkins was born in New England and attended Mt. Holyoke College where one of the buildings bears her name.
Sponsored by In the Spotlight, Inc. with a grant from the MA Cultural Council through the Springfield Cultural Council.
The program is FREE.
