This month's book selection:

All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley’s Sack, a Black Family Keepsake by Tiya Miles (2021) nonfiction.

In 1850s South Carolina, an enslaved woman named Rose faced a crisis: the imminent sale of her daughter Ashley. Thinking quickly, she packed a cotton bag for her with a few items. Today, Ashley’s sack is displayed in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Historian Tiya Miles traces the life and cultural context of Ashley’s sack as it was handed down through three generations of loving Black women.
